The eVects of inventory on vowel perception in French and Spanish: An MEG study

چکیده
Production studies have shown that speakers of languages with larger phoneme inventories expand their acoustic space relative to languages with smaller inventories [Bradlow, A. (1995). A comparative acoustic study of English and Spanish vowels. Journal of the Acoustical Society of America, 97(3), 1916–1924; Jongman, A., Fourakis, M., & Sereno, J. (1989). The acoustic vowel space of Modern Greek and German. Language Speech, 32, 221–248]. In this study, we investigated whether this acoustic expansion in production has a perceptual correlate, that is, whether the perceived distance between pairs of sounds separated by equal acoustic distances varies as a function of inventory size or organization. We used magnetoencephalography, speciWcally the mismatch Weld response (MMF), and compared two language groups, French and Spanish, whose vowel inventories diVer in size and organization. Our results show that the MMF is sensitive to inventory size but not organization, suggesting that speakers of languages with larger inventories perceive the same sounds as less similar than speakers with smaller inventories. © 2006 Published by Elsevier Inc.

متن کاملPerception of Brazilian Portuguese Vowels by Australian English and Spanish Listeners
Many studies on non‐native speech and second language (L2) perception suggest that a second language learner hears with a foreign accent when listening to or perceiving the sounds of the new language (for a review see Strange, 1995, 2007; Escudero, 2005). It is well‐established that the learners’ native or first language influences how they he...
متن کاملOn the role of L1 speech production in L2 perception: evidence from Spanish learners of French
Spanish (L2) speakers have difficulty in perceiving the French vowel height contrast /e/-/ /. L2 perception models attribute this perceptual difficulty to native (L1) phonology. For example, the Spanish /e/ vowel, which is perceptually similar to both French vowels, is assumed to influence their perception through an assimilation process. This pattern of assimilation depends upon the degree of ...
متن کاملEffect of Vowel Auditory Training on the Speech-In-Noise Perception among Older Adults with Normal Hearing
Introduction: Aging reduces the ability to understand speech in noise. Hearing rehabilitation is one of the ways to help older people communicate effectively. This study aimed to investigate the effect of vowel auditory training on the improvement of speech-in-noise (SIN) perception among elderly listeners. Materials and Methods: This study was conducted on 36 elderly ...
متن کاملImpact of Duration and Vowel Inventory Size on Formant Values of Oral Vowels: an Automated Formant Analysis from Eight Languages
Eight languages (Arabic, English, French, German, Italian, Mandarin Chinese, Portuguese, Spanish) with 6 differently sized vowel inventories were analysed in terms of vowel formants. A tendency to phonetic reduction for vowels of short acoustic durations clearly emerges for all languages. The data did not provide evidence for an effect of inventory size on the global acoustic space and only the...
